At the invitation of the Centro Ciência Viva de Tavira, researchers Ana Matias and Rita Carrasco (CIMA, UAlg) are giving a lecture at the Jorge Augusto Correia Secondary School to present the Ria Formosa barrier island system, including its various eco-geomorphological environments: beaches, dunes, marshes, channels and tidal bars. Focus will be given to how the various environments are interconnected, as well as to the relationship between physical processes and the ecosystem. After describing these environments with illustrative examples, the way the islands or parts of them are naturally created and destroyed over the last decades will be explained in a simplified way. The impact of storms and the barrier islands' resilience mechanisms will also be analysed in the lecture.
